Frequently Asked Questions

The estimated due date (EDD) is calculated using Naegele's Rule: add 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). This assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14. Most pregnancies deliver within ±2 weeks of the EDD — only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date.
Gestational age is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and is the standard used by doctors. Fetal age (or fertilization age) counts from conception, roughly 2 weeks later. So when your doctor says you are 8 weeks pregnant, the fetus is about 6 weeks old. Gestational age is always used in this calculator.
The first trimester runs from week 1 to week 13 (conception to about 3 months). The second trimester covers weeks 14 to 26 — often the most comfortable period with reduced nausea and more energy. The third trimester is weeks 27 to 40, ending at the due date. These divisions help track development and schedule antenatal care appointments.
Week 24 is often called the 'viability threshold' — the point at which babies born prematurely have a reasonable chance of survival with intensive neonatal care. Survival rates improve significantly each week from 24 onward. At 24 weeks, a baby's lungs begin producing surfactant (a substance needed to breathe air). By 28 weeks, survival rates exceed 90% at specialist centres.
