Frequently Asked Questions
BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated from weight and height: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². WHO categories: Underweight (<18.5), Normal weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), Obese (≥30). BMI is a screening tool and does not directly measure body fat or muscle mass.
For most adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy (normal) weight. BMI below 18.5 is underweight; 25–29.9 is overweight; 30 and above is obese. Athletes may have a higher BMI due to muscle mass — BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.
Research shows South Asians develop metabolic risks at lower BMI values. ICMR and health bodies recommend adjusted cut-offs: overweight at BMI ≥23 and obesity at ≥27.5 for South Asian populations, compared to the global WHO standard of 25 and 30.
Metric: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². Example: 70 kg, 175 cm → 70 ÷ (1.75)² ≈ 22.9 (normal). Imperial: BMI = (weight(lbs) × 703) ÷ height(in)². Example: 154 lbs, 5 ft 10 in (70 in) → (154 × 703) ÷ 4900 ≈ 22.1.
