Download time = file size in bits ÷ connection speed in bits per second. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, a 1 GB file is 8,000 megabits. At 100 Mbps, that takes 8,000 ÷ 100 = 80 seconds. ISPs advertise speeds in Mbps (megabits), while file sizes are in MB or GB (megabytes), so always multiply the file size by 8 before dividing.
10 GB = 80,000 megabits. At 100 Mbps: 80,000 ÷ 100 = 800 seconds = 13 minutes 20 seconds. At 50 Mbps the same file takes 26 minutes 40 seconds. At 1 Gbps (fiber) it takes just 80 seconds. Real-world speeds are often lower than advertised due to server limits, Wi-Fi overhead, and network congestion.
Mbps stands for megabits per second — the unit ISPs use to advertise connection speeds. MB/s stands for megabytes per second — the unit download managers (browsers, Steam, torrent clients) display. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps. If your ISP plan is 100 Mbps, your maximum download speed in a download manager is 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s.
A 50 GB game = 400,000 megabits. At 100 Mbps: 4,000 seconds ≈ 1 hour 6 minutes. At 25 Mbps: 16,000 seconds ≈ 4 hours 26 minutes. At 1 Gbps fiber: 400 seconds ≈ 6 minutes 40 seconds. Note that game downloads often include additional patch files, so the final installed size may be larger.
