Frequently Asked Questions
No. The popular "1 dog year = 7 human years" is a myth. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years (a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 31-year-old human), then slow down. A 2019 UCSD/AVMA study found the formula 16 × ln(age) + 31 is far more accurate.
Larger breeds age faster after age 2. A 10-year-old small dog (~56 human years) is noticeably younger biologically than a 10-year-old giant-breed dog (~80 human years). The AKC provides size-specific charts used by veterinarians.
Cats age 15 human years in their first year, reach the equivalent of 24 by year 2, then add roughly 4 human years per calendar year. A 10-year-old cat is about 56 in human terms; a 20-year-old cat is around 96.
Veterinarians generally classify small and medium dogs as seniors at 7–8 years old, large breeds at 6 years, and giant breeds at 5 years — because they reach "middle age" sooner in human-equivalent terms.
