Fuel Efficiency Format
Quick Reference
Reference uses your current efficiency and price inputs (or defaults if not entered).
| Distance (km) | Fuel Needed (litres) | Est. Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 3.33 | 3.33 |
| 100 | 6.67 | 6.67 |
| 150 | 10.00 | 10.00 |
| 200 | 13.33 | 13.33 |
| 300 | 20.00 | 20.00 |
| 500 | 33.33 | 33.33 |
| 800 | 53.33 | 53.33 |
Fuel cost estimates are based on your inputs. Actual costs may vary with driving conditions, traffic, vehicle load, and fuel type.
Frequently Asked Questions
Enter your trip distance, car fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price. For example: 200 km trip, 15 km/L efficiency, and £1.50/litre = £20 total cost. The formula is: Total Cost = (Distance ÷ Efficiency) × Price per litre. For L/100km mode: Total Cost = (Distance ÷ 100) × L/100km × Price per litre.
Fuel efficiency depends on your region and vehicle type. In India and Australia, 15–20 km/L is considered good for a petrol car. In Europe, 5–7 L/100km is typical for an efficient petrol car (diesel averages 4–6 L/100km). In the US, 30–40 mpg is good for a non-hybrid car. Hybrids and EVs dramatically exceed these figures. City driving typically uses 20–30% more fuel than highway driving.
All three measure fuel efficiency but in different ways: km/L (kilometres per litre) — higher is better, used in India and Australia; L/100km (litres per 100 km) — lower is better, used in Europe; mpg (miles per gallon) — higher is better, used in the US and UK. To convert: 15 km/L = 6.67 L/100km = 35.3 mpg (US). Use this calculator's mode toggle to switch between them.
It depends on your car's fuel efficiency. At 15 km/L (typical petrol car), a 100 km trip uses 6.7 litres. At 20 km/L (fuel-efficient hatchback), it uses 5 litres. At 10 km/L (large SUV or truck), it uses 10 litres. In L/100km terms, a car rated at 7 L/100km uses exactly 7 litres per 100 km. Enter your car's specific efficiency above for a precise calculation.
